Microsoft announced that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 had hit the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) milestone on July 22, 2009. We know that 7600.16385 is the final build number but Microsoft has refused to share the full build string. Leaks from a few weeks ago point out, however, that it's '6.1.7600.16385.090713-1255,' which indicates that the final build was compiled on July 13, 2009, at 12:55pm. This would be in line with the rumored RTM compilation date but it is also the day Microsoft stated that the operating system had not yet hit RTM. Although the final build had been compiled, Microsoft still had to put it through testing before christening it as RTM.
As a reminder, the system requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2 are below:
- Processor - Minimum: 1.4 GHz (x64 processor), Note: An Intel Itanium 2 processor is required for Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems
- Memory - Minimum: 512 MB RAM, Maximum: 8 GB (Foundation) or 32 GB (Standard) or 2 TB (Enterprise, Datacenter, and Itanium-Based Systems)
- Disk Space Requirements - Minimum: 32 GB or greater, Foundation: 10 GB or greater, Note: Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files
- Display - Super VGA (800 600) or higher resolution monitor
- Other - DVD Drive, Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse (or compatible pointing device), Internet access (fees may apply)
More groups will be getting the RTM builds of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in the next few weeks. To figure out where you stand, check out our table of release dates for both operating systems. Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be available worldwide to the public on October 22, 2009.
